Earth Observation research and teaching activities are a fundamental part of the Geomatics Research Group (GRG) of the Institute of Geography at the Ruhr-University of Bochum, where more than 70 scientists and 1,400 students are involved in the research and teaching of ecosystem services, in the relation of cognition and cartographic representation, in social disparities within cities, in the economic development of regions as well as in the transformation of the metropolitan region.
Remote sensing activities are mainly focussed on urban areas to identify urban building structures, urban green and blue infrastructure and valuable economic targets etc. and their changes…

The EO4GEO project is building a community around Earth Observation (EO) and Geographic Information (GI) sectors, and participating as an EO4GEO BoK expert to support the elaboration of the Body of Knowledge (BoK) is the best way to start interacting.
Professionals and academics who have knowledge and experience in the EO and GI…

To help to bridge the gap between supply and demand of education and training in the EO/GI sector, in the EO4GEO project, experts and practitioners are creating the EO4GEO Body of Knowledge (BoK). The BoK forms a consolidated account of the earth observation and geographic information field, expressed in terms of concepts, relationships between them, and skills. To date, the official BoK version contains over 900 concepts, 1100 relationships and 1800 skills, which together structure and capture…

The first public release of the EO4GEO BoK is now available!
The EO4GEO BoK is constructed in the Living Textbook tool based on the principles of ontology, with well-defined concepts as building blocks and the relationships between them. It provides experts with a way to model, view and share their knowledge domain in a structural way. In the case of EO4GEO, it represents the domain of Earth Observation (EO) and Geographic Information (GI). In this way, we use the Living Textbook tool to…

By its definition, the EO4GEO BoK is a formal description of the EO/GI domain represented by a complete set of concepts in a structured way, including the theories, methods and technologies that can be used by members of a discipline to guide their education and work practice (Olijslagers, 2019). The BoK defines what knowledge and skills are needed to complete jobs or tasks…

The educational offer design concept and foreseen process have been presented at the 2nd Earth Observation Summit (2–3 June 2020), virtually organised by the Faculty of Geodesy — University of Zagreb as an official event of the Croatian Presidency of the European Union Council. Around 900 participants had the opportunity to follow the sessions related to the development of the EO4GEO educational offer and discuss it. Being aware that one project can’t design a comprehensive educational offer for EO and related fields, a concept to design educational offers — which can serve as a…

Since EO4GEO aims to close the skills gap between the supply and demand of education and training in the space/geodata sector, the methods developed in the project should of course also be tested in practical training. An analysis of the training actions then will show whether the learning objectives have been achieved and thus whether the EO4GEO method is effective.
There are different tools and analyses from the EO4GEO project that support the development of training actions. The analysis of the occupational profiles and curricula showed different groups to which a training…

EO4GEO is developing an ecosystem of tools, building on the rich EO/GI expert knowledge and skills available in the EO4GEO Body of Knowledge. The end user tools are targeting training and education providers, companies and organizations, and individuals as well. After intensive internal testing of the prototype tools, it is time for real users to explore them and validate their usefulness. In this article we get some answers from Sven Casteleyn, Universitat Jaume I of Castelló (Spain) regarding the tools’ development and next steps.
Mozaika, a new associated partner in EO4GEO, is a data company with a solid knowledge of satellite data access, management, description and use, meeting GIS and Earth Observation in many projects and partnerships.
Mozaika has been engaged in projects involving GIS and Earth Observation for several years now. For this reason, our staff was signed up for online introductory courses of the GIS system, to ensure their basic knowledge of the argument. Additionally, we partner with ESRI Bulgaria in several projects and have hired the company to provide specialized tutorials for advanced GIS features, related to our R&D projects in…
